From 2023, all municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants will include a vertical LEZ sign informing about traffic restrictions.
The
General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) has announced the creation of a new sign to identify
Low Emission Zones and other vehicle access instructions in urban areas. This vertical sign informs about the prohibition of entry to
motor vehicles , except for those with environmental labels
C, ECO, and ZERO .
According to the
DGT , this sign will facilitate the application of the
Climate Change Law promoted by the Ministry for Ecological Transaction and the Demographic Challenge, which came into force on May 22 and requires all municipalities with more than
50,000 inhabitants to establish
Low Emission Zones by 2023 .
Safer and more connected cities
According to authorities, the goal of this measure is to "make
cities safer, healthier, and more competitive ." These signs will also allow residents, drivers, and visitors to urban areas to know in advance about current restrictions and plan their travel plans.
The
DGT points out that the implementation of
Low Emission Zones "will contribute to improving air quality and the health of citizens, as well as mitigating climate change and noise pollution , which will boost energy efficiency in transport by promoting its electrification."
Likewise, those localities that include the ZBE sign and that communicate these areas to the DGT will be incorporated into the
DGT 3.0 platform, which will be responsible for
transmitting the information to road users .
Some cities, such as
Madrid and Barcelona, have already included Low Emission Zones , and other cities that comply with the regulations will do so as well, thus harmonizing traffic flow and contributing to
cleaner, smarter, and more environmentally friendly cities .
