Questions and Answers

A V16 emergency warning light is a luminous device that replaces traditional warning triangles . It is mounted on the roof of the vehicle in the event of a breakdown or accident and emits a flashing amber signal visible in 360 degrees, even in low visibility conditions.

This type of light has been developed to improve road safety by preventing drivers from having to exit the vehicle to report an incident, thereby reducing the risk of being run over.

Starting January 1, 2026 , these V16 lights will be required to be connected and approved by the DGT (Directorate General of Traffic). This means they must incorporate geolocation technology so that, when used, they automatically send the vehicle's location to the DGT's traffic platform, facilitating a faster and more effective response.

The V16 emergency warning light will be mandatory on all vehicles in Spain starting January 1, 2026, provided the model is approved and connected to the DGT (Directorate-General for Traffic). This means it must include a geolocation system that sends the vehicle's position in the event of a breakdown or accident.

Until that date, you are still allowed to use emergency triangles or an unattended V16 light, provided it is approved.

Starting in 2026, only V16 lights with automatic connection to the DGT 3.0 platform will be valid, and they will be mandatory to carry in the vehicle and use in the event of an emergency stop on intercity roads.

To find out if a V16 emergency light is certified by the DGT , you must check that:

  1. It is certified by one of the authorized laboratories (such as IDIADA, Applus, etc.).
  2. It includes on its casing (tulip) the certification code, which begins with the letters LCOE or IDIADA , followed by a numerical series.
  3. If it's a connected light, it must appear on the official list of authorized devices published by the General Directorate of Traffic.

You can consult this updated list on the official DGT website.
