Ice and snow in sight? Do not ignore the challenge of driving in these conditions

Gelo e neve à vista? Não escorregue no desafio de conduzir nestas condições

With cold winter weather, even in a country with mild temperatures like Portugal, unexpected conditions can arise that make driving more challenging. Snow and, especially, the dreaded black gel (ou verglas) can surprise even the most experienced drivers. In these situations, the adhesion is reduced, the steering work system becomes less effective and the maneuvers require an extra dose of calm and caution.

In this article, we explain the main risks, we offer practical advice for safe driving and we highlight how the Help Flash lighting device can be a decisive ally in these situations.

Or is it black gel (verglas) and why is it so perigoso?

Black gel (also known as verglas) is a thin layer of completely transparent gel that forms on surfaces such as asphalt, becoming practically invisible. This phenomenon frequently occurs, even in Portugal, in shady areas, bridges and viaducts, especially during the night or in the first hours of the morning, when temperatures approach negative values. Keep in mind that factors such as wind and humidity can lead to the appearance of frost even when temperatures are positive (at around +3º).

This phenomenon tends to dissipate during the day, but it can persist in shady areas, such as roads flanked by dense trees, and represent a hidden danger for drivers.

Where does it arise? On mountain roads or in especially cold areas, roads under bridges or underground passages. It is important to be aware of these areas, because the ice is not easily perceptible at first glance.

How do you identify it? Pay attention to road areas with abnormal brightness. If the asphalt seems smoother and more shiny than in other locations, open and redouble its care.

How to drive on roads with snow or ice?

  1. Reduce the speed and be gentle in the maneuvers

Always adapt the speed to the road conditions and avoid sudden accelerations that could lead to loss of traffic. In case of ice or snow, it is important to pay attention to the indications on the signals that inform you about the road status.

  1. Increase at a safe distance

At the distance of work you can significantly increase the distances with ice. Guarantee always a margin of security increased between your vehicle and the rest.

  1. Evite travagens a fundo

If your car loses power, stay calm. Lightly release the accelerator, avoid sudden steering, and gently turn the steering wheel in the direction of the skid to regain control. Pull the engine/travão off when it drops, maintaining lower ratios.

  1. Veja e seja visto

Use the crossing lights (media) even during the day. If visibility is reduced (below 100 m), connect the nevoeiro lights, but be sure to disconnect them when visibility is restored.

  1. Prepare your car before leaving home
  • Remove the ice or snow from the windshield, glass and roof. Attention, never use hot water to do anything because the difference in temperature can cause the glass to break. A homemade solution based on gel alcohol (1/3 gel gel and 2/3 water) is very effective.
  • Check the tires, ensuring that they are in good condition and with adequate pressure. Consider winter tires or snow currents if you live in an area that is usually more prone to these phenomena.
  • Keep the tank stocked to avoid unforeseen events.
  • Pay attention to the condition of the battery, as low temperatures are especially challenging for this element.
  1. Winter kit in the car

Always have an emergency kit, which includes:

  • Roupa quente e mantas
  • Water and energy foods
  • Lanterna e pilhas
  • Ice scraper
  • Help Flash light device
  • Loaded mobile phone and assistance contacts

What to do if you are immobilized due to snow or ice?

In case of failure, skid or block the road, or more importantly signal your presence. Neste context, or luminous device Help Flash becomes essential.

Porquê o Help Flash?

  • It is visible from a long distance, even in low light conditions.
  • It works automatically with a simple magnetic contact.
  • Allows you to signal your presence, before leaving the car to place the triangle

In addition to facilitating signalization and increasing your safety, Help Flash can help emergency teams and other drivers detect an immobilized vehicle.

Above all, regardless of the circumstances, remain calm and opt for defensive driving. In the end, anticipating risks and adopting responsible behavior in the steering wheel makes everything different. And you know: this winter, make road safety a priority!
