You've probably heard: triangles are numbered. The signaling ones, of course, but others are still popular: on Filmin, for example, the search "love triangle" yields 309 results. Just in case you're a fan of
binge watching. Or something else.
But returning to the emergency triangles, although they'll be with us for a while yet, we're already feeling a little nostalgic. It's understandable. We've been together for many years. We've taken them everywhere: to the office, on vacation, on weekends... And we still had a lot to learn about them. For example, were they oblique, obtuse, or acute?
So we did what we always do when we get nostalgic: listen to music. And make a playlist.
Our top 10 songs about triangles
Before we start with the list, let's go over the rules. Everyone knows that
making a playlist is an art , but since this is our first one, we're not going to be too strict. We'll just apply three:
- The word triangle must appear (not emergency, nor should you ask for the impossible).
- It has to be as varied as possible (then tell us what you like the most in the comments).
- There cannot be two songs from the same group or the same soloist (for the same reason as point 2).
Of course, we also hope to surprise you with a top entry. You might even have to skip some. If, in return, we introduce you to a new band or style, we'll be delighted.
Here we go:
10. THE BERMUDA TRIANGLE, GEORGE DREXLER (2014)
If we're talking about objects that are going to disappear, we couldn't start any other way.
Fake news ? I'm telling you, but we love The X-Files too much to erase the most famous triangle in history from our minds. And even more so, with so much room for us to talk about everything we talk about when we don't want to talk about love:
"I became a watchdog / from the scent of your hair / Hiding my longing / watching your mouth speak / All my crazy compasses changing my flight plan."
9. SUPER TRIANGLE, THE GO! TEAM (2011)
There was a time when you couldn't organize a music festival without inviting The Go! Team. They're to stages what Luca Toni is to football teams: no matter the city, they've been there. For this playlist, we've revived a track from
" Rolling Blackouts ," their third album. As simple, luminous, and evocative as those landscapes you love to gaze at from your car window.
8. TRIANGLE WALKS, FEVER RAY (2009)
The sun sets. You enter a road that requires all your senses. A storm threatens, but never breaks; you don't quite know whether to worry or enjoy the moment. That's the music of
Fever Ray . Rather than moving between extremes, it brings you closer to them. Music with dense and dark atmospheres, but so melodic that you can hear it in video games like
PES 2011 or in series like
Vikings.
7. TRI ANGLE: THE END (2010 – 2020)
What's a playlist without its hidden gem? We're breaking our own rules (not the name of a song) to talk about one of the most interesting electronic music projects of this century:
TriAngle Records . From their first release, "
Let Me Shine for You ," a collection of Lindsay Lohan covers, to this farewell playlist, Robin Carolan's label has introduced us to artists like Forest Swords, Oneohtrix Point Never, and The Haxan Cloak, once unknown but now collaborators with stars like The Weeknd, Björk, and Kayne West.
6. PINK TRIANGLE, WEEZER (1996)
Feeling a bit down after all that dark electronica? Don't worry. We're coming out of the tunnel and back on the road with
Weezer , capable of lifting your spirits even in the middle of a 50-mile traffic jam. Especially with the classic "boy meets girl and wants to be by her side for life" story... The thing is, she's not the least bit interested in him (and she's a lesbian, hence the
pink triangle) . It's okay, just ignore the lyrics and everything's solved.
Disclaimer: It's not music for everyone, but if you like it, you won't stop listening to it.
5. LOVE TRIANGLE, DIANA KING (1995)
We're missing something in this top 10, aren't we? A great voice. One that enhances everything she touches: pop, reggae, R&B... you name it. And one that makes you fall in love with every song. On "
Tougher Than Love," her debut album after collaborating on a track with Notorious BIG,
Diana King included this hit about a quintessential love triangle: "
Ever been in love with a man (and love another man)? " All's fair in love and war.
4. BIZARRE LOVE TRIANGLE, BAWRUT Feat. WHITE BOY (2020)
From the classic to the most recent; no, it's not a cover, even if that beginning takes us back to the eighties. The collaboration between the Italian Bawrut and Chico Blanco,
" the last white hope of our pop," which they re-released this year, clearly intends to dominate clubs and discos. No complications. No hard feelings:
" I don't get drunk / bizarre love triangle."
3. THE ETERNAL TRIANGLE, DIZZY GILLESPIE (1957)
Do you like jazz? If so, you'll already know the song. And if not, what better way to start listening to jazz than with the classics? Dizzy Gillespie with Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins, in what is universally recognized as one of the best jam sessions recorded (or at least, that's what
Allmusic says). Enjoy
bebop .
2. YE AULD TRIANGLE, CAT POWER (2008)
We could have stuck with The Pogues’ version, which was rediscovered by the general public in 1984. Or with Jeff Tweedy’s. Or with Bob Dylan’s, etc. Since it was composed by Dick Shannon in 1952, “
The Auld Triangle ” (or
The Old Triangle ,
Ye Auld Triangle , etc.) has become a standard: a classic that has been performed in all styles, in all eras, even with changed lyrics (originally about Mountjoy Prison in Dublin). Here we stick with
Cat Power ’s version, included on her covers EP “
Dark End of the Street ”.
1. BIZARRE LOVE TRIANGLE, NEW ORDER (1986)
Number 1 could have gone to either Galicia or Manchester, but Triángulo de Amor Bizarro, the Coruña band, doesn't have a single with that name. They do have an album, but we've already cheated a bit with number 7... In any case, the triumph of Summer, Hook, Gilbert and Morris is more than justified.
“ Bizarre Love Triangle ” is another gem from New Order’s best period, the one that spans from “
Power, Corruption & Lies ” (1983) to “
Technique” (1989), where each single and practically each album immediately became a classic, uniting punk with Ibiza discos, pop melodies with house, blowing up charts, dance floors and best-of-the-year lists. And whoever thinks they belong to the past, should think again: their legendary “
Blue Monday ” was the soundtrack of the last European Championship, through Tik Tok spots. Eternal.
We look forward to your fervent comments of support and, even more so, your unbridled criticism. You're sure to miss a song. We're all ears.
